Borage is an annual plant belonging to the borage family. It is distinguished by blue, five-pointed star-shaped flowers with an intense cucumber scent. The herbal raw material is cold-pressed borage seeds, from which the oil is obtained. It is a rich source of polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids. The most important of these is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), the content of which in the oil is 16-27%.

Gamma-linolenic acid is a source of essential unsaturated fatty acids (EFAs). The name of these acids relates to the need to supply them through food, as they are not synthesised in the human body. EFAs are also referred to as vitamin F, essential in the diet, a term derived from the English phrase "Fatty Acids".

The scope of GLA's action largely depends on the form of application. Applied externally, it passes only into the stratum corneum of the epidermis and fills the intercellular space.
