Astaxanthin, a xanthophyll algae pigment Haematococcus Pluvialis it gives the characteristic colour to, among others, salmon, shrimp and krill. One of the most fascinating phenomena in the world of flora and fauna is the migration of salmon. These fish accumulate astaxanthin remarkably well in their muscles, and this may explain their incredible strength in covering distances upriver measured in hundreds and thousands of kilometers.
Algae Haematococcus Pluvialis are the main food source of krill, so it can be said that the astaxanthin they contain plus the astaxanthin found in Bioastin enhance the effect of the omega-3 acids in the dietary supplement "Neptune Krill Oil" (NKO – Krill Oil). More scientific research is needed to fully explain the mechanism of action of astaxanthin – but even today its unique properties can be enjoyed with confidence, as evidenced by the huge number of positive articles in leading world media, including Times, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated, as well as in numerous scientific publications.
Bioastin works perfectly together with Spirulina Pacifica algae and with Krill Oil.

Production of BioAstin
Cyanotech Corporation has been a producer of algae-based products for more than 21 years.
It has developed advanced technology which, combined with an excellent farming location on the Kona Coast, Hawaii, makes it possible to produce algae products free of any contamination.
The production of BioAstin Natural Astaxanthin from Haematococcus Pluvialis algae uses advanced technology. The initial growth stage of these algae takes place in closed pond systems with a capacity of up to 40,000 liters. The next short "red coloring" cycle, lasting 5-7 days, takes place in open growing ponds with a capacity of 50,000 liters. At every stage of BioAstin production, the Haematococcus algae cultures are monitored by microscopic examination to ensure that the cultures are pure and free of contamination. After the "red coloring" cycle is complete, the algae are harvested, washed, and dried. The final stage of BioAstin production is the extraction of the dried Haematococcus algae biomass using supercritical carbon dioxide to produce an oleoresin free of biological or environmental contaminants. The supercritical extraction process is a key production stage ensuring the proper effectiveness, purity and quality of BioAstin Natural Astaxanthin.
A common misconception is that closed microalgae culture pools protect against contamination by other organisms. However, this is not true. Such closed cultures can also become contaminated by other algae, fungi or protozoa. In such a situation, removing biological contaminants from closed pools can be very difficult due to the specific nature of this type of cultivation system. Indeed, persistent contamination of closed cultures has led to serious problems for producers of algae preparations in California, Europe and Hawaii (not Cyanotech). The closed and open pond systems were developed based on Cyanotech's many years of experience. They were meant to minimise problems and ensure that algae-based products are free from contaminants.
Cyanotech has been granted a permit by the Hawaii State Department of Health to produce and process natural Astaxanthin. We also hold a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certificate and operate in accordance with FDA (Food and Drug Administration) guidelines. Every batch of BioAstin Natural Astaxanthin undergoes rigorous quality control testing to ensure the highest quality and purity of the final product. In addition, years of experience and patented technology allow for the production of significantly larger amounts of natural astaxanthin. Cyanotech Co.'s market share in sales of Astaxanthin products is over 95%.
